Mulleian Paintings and the Public
And Photo Documentation
of the Artist at Work.
Visitors to the Frank Gallery would bring people from all walks of life, ranging from the very young to the very old, from the poor to the very rich, from the common folk to the very famous, from the blue - collar workers to the intellectuals. His works were breaking barriers through universal means, bringing people together, which eventually led to a large following of Mulleian's paintings on a national and international scale. Ongoing pilgrimages would be made by the many to see a Mulleian exhibit. Countless many would come to see the artist at work in his studio. Noted for his startling realism and detail, along with his thought-provoking subject matter, Mulleian was breaking barriers on a universal level, as well as drawing people of diverse perspectives together. People would bring gifts and letters, mail from all over the country and Europe would be sent to the artist. But through all the years, Mulleian remembers one visitor in particular, a visitor who seemed to convey an aura of timelessness. One afternoon, while high up on the scaffold working on a large scale painting entitled Progression, Mulleian looked down to see a stranger who seemed to silently beckon him to descend. Upon climbing down from the scaffold and drawing nearer to meet this person, after a brief introduction there was suddenly a warm, deep eye contact and a gesture of Providential blessing. Extended gently in a weathered, steady hand was a bottle of rare vintage champagne, a gift of appreciation and affirmation from the hand of a 90 year old woman. There were no further words spoken. This is one story among many that convey the public reaction to the artist's work and its effects on an appreciative public. Often that effect is a transcendent testament of generations coming together.
